Audited Supplier Geocells were first used and patented in the early 80's by the United States Corps of Engineers. The early use of the technology was for the construction of roads over soft soils for use. Today, GeoCell is not only used for base stabilization, but also for erosion control of slopes and channels as well as in construction of retaining walls.

There are two types of geocells, they are perforated and non-perforated geocells. Perforated geocells have small holes in them that allow water and air to flow through. This type of geocell is best for applications where the soil needs to be able to breathe, like in a green infrastructure project.
Channel Protection Geocell can be installed on slopes as steep as 60 degrees and on channels with flow velocities greater than 25 ft/s (7.6 m/s), depending on infill material.
